Edgar Carranza is the managing shareholder with BACKUS, CARRANZA & BURDEN and has been a member since its inception in 1997. Mr. Carranza is an AV rated attorney representing individuals, domestic corporations and foreign corporations in a variety of different areas including Commercial Litigation, Employment Law, Professional Liability Defense (including attorneys, real estate professionals, mortgage brokers, insurance agents, insurance brokers, chiropractors, therapists and medical physicians), Covenants Not To Compete, Recreational/Sports Law (including equine law, ski resort liability, race track liability and assault/battery involving professional athletes), Food Liability, Medical Products Liability, Mass Torts (including asbestos litigation, bone-screw litigation and tobacco litigation), Multi-District Litigation, Bad Faith Litigation, Insurance Defense, Premises Liability, Insurance Coverage and General Civil Litigation.

Mr. Carranza is admitted to practice before all Nevada state courts and the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. He has represented clients in numerous jury trials, bench trials, evidentiary hearings, administrative trials, arbitration hearings, mediations and appellate arguments before the Nevada Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit. Many of these matters have resulted in reported cases including the following:

  • Schonbachler v. Karol Western Corp., Slip Copy, 2010 WL 3583012 (D. Nev. September 7, 2010) (granting summary judgment in favor of employer on claims of age discrimination under the federal ADEA and Nevada statutory equivalent and dismissing individual defendants from personal liability in this employment discrimination lawsuit).
  • Sanchez v. Walgreen Co., et al., 125 Nev. Advance Opinion 60 (December 24, 2009) (affirming summary judgment for Walgreen Co. and the other pharmacy defendants holding that pharmacists do not owe a duty to unknown third parties in wrongful death action). 
  • Simkins v. NevadCare, Inc., 229 F.3d 729 (9th Cir. 2000) (successfully reversing the trial court's granting of summary judgment and entering summary judgment on behalf of Simkins in ERISA related matter).  
  • Moses v. Danek Medical, Inc., et. al., 1998 WL 1041279 (D. Nev. 1998) (successfully excluding expert in Orthopedic Bone Screw Litigation matter- MDL 1014).
  • Suzy Kendal v. GES Exposition Services, Inc., 174 F.R.D. 684 (D. Nev. 1997) (successfully prevailing on motion to compel discovery from opposing party in sexual discrimination case).Mr. Carranza is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (2000) and the United States Supreme Court (2001).

Mr. Carranza was born in El Paso, Texas on January 30, 1969. He studied at Arizona State University, Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law where he was bestowed a Juris Doctor degree in the spring of 1994. He was also graduated in the winter of 1990 from the University of Texas earning dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Government and Latin American Studies.

Mr. Carranza is an active member of several legal organizations. These include the American Bar Association (ABA) (Member, Employment Law Section and Litigation Section), the Nevada State Bar Association and the Clark County Bar Association (CCBA). He is also a member of the prestigious International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) and Defense Research Institute (DRI), where he is active in the Employment Law and Product Liability/Food Liability section. He is an active member of and previously sat on the executive board of the Latino Bar Association for Southern Nevada (LBA) and a member of the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA).

Philanthropically, Mr. Carranza is involved as a mentor with the Huellas Mentoring Program through the UNLV Boyd School of Law. He also volunteers and supports many community organizations including the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) and donates his time to represent members of the community on a pro bono basis.

Mr. Carranza has attained an AV rating (5.0 out of 5.0), the highest rating bestowed by Martindale Hubble. He was named a 2009 Rising Star by the Mountain States Super Lawyers and is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Las Vegas. The Leadership Las Vegas program is an intensive, 10-month program sponsored by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce devoted to strengthening and educating our community leaders by providing in-depth insights into a variety of issues impacting residents of Southern Nevada and connections with many policy makers in all sectors of the community. He continues to be an active member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and is an associate member of the Nevada Tavern Owners Association.

Mr. Carranza speaks, reads and writes Spanish fluently and has had occasion to represent Spanish speaking clients and business owners.
